AP wants IPL matches postponed - Sathish - 03-12-2009

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh government on Thursday said it cannot provide security for the high-.profile Indian Premier League matches scheduled to be held here between April 13 and 10 May as the dates coincide with the assembly and parliamentary elections.

In a letter to the home ministry, the AP government has sought postponement of the matches. The schedule will have to be re-jigged once again if the centre accedes to APs demand.

"The maximum deployment of forces will be required for elections. We will not be able to divert the security forces for the IPL matches.

We have put forth a request to the ministry to postpone the dates of the matches and have them after the polling phase,” said a top official with state police.

IPL Matches are slated Hyderabad and Vishakapatnam in the state. Chennai Super King, Delhi Dare Devils, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers, Kolkatta Knight Riders and Kings XI Punjab will play against Deccan Chargers here.

The tournament came under a cloud of uncertainty in the wake of the deadly terror attack on the Sri Lankan cricketers in Lahore. The centre is now taking all precautionary measures to avert any untoward incident during the tournament.

While the dates of the inaugural and closing (April 10 and may 24) are set to remain the same, a final call on the dates of the tournament will be taken once all the states submit their reports.

However, there would be a 48-hour cushion between the match-day and election-day in the cities that would host the matches. The states in which the IPL matches are scheduled are Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Delhi.
