Discovery gets MIB approval to rename DSport as Eurosport - nairrk - 03-19-2020

[Image: NPCmuNc.png]MUMBAI: The ministry of information and broadcasting (MIB) has approved Discovery India’s application to rename DSport and DSport HD as Eurosport and Eurosport HD.

Eurosport is a sports network having a presence in Europe and Asia. In 2015, Discovery had acquired full ownership of Eurosport for $534 million.

It must be noted that Lex Sportel had moved Delhi High Court seeking directions for MIB to set aside the downlinking permission granted to Discovery for DSport. It had also pleaded that the MIB should reject Discovery’s application for renaming DSport as Eurosport.

Discovery gets MIB approval to rename DSport as EurosportThe Delhi High Court had issued an order directing the Union of India (UOI) to take a decision on the application dated 9th October 2019 filed by Discovery for change of name from ‘DSport’ to ‘EuroSport’ within eight weeks.

The order further stated that if Discovery continues to rely upon the letter dated 17th January 2017, which had approved the uplinking of the DSport channel from Hong Kong, as part of its name change application or any other application seeking approvals, Lex Sportel’s submissions would be considered and they would be given an opportunity to explain their stand.

If on the other hand, Discovery does not rely upon the approval dated 17th January 2017 then the UOI shall consider the same as per its policy guidelines, and pass appropriate orders as per the prevalent guidelines for uplinking and downlinking, the order had said.

Discovery had ended its relationship with third-party service provider Lex Sportel for its sports channel DSport effective 14th February. Lex Sportel, which is promoted by former Dish TV India CEO RC Venkateish, was managing the channel on behalf of Discovery.

The company had also expanded the role of Vijay Rajput, currently serving as SVP – Affiliate Sales & Product Distribution, with the additional responsibility of heading its sports business in South Asia.

DSport was launched in 2017 as a premium sports channel with a focus on sports like Horse Racing, Football, Golf, Motorsports, Rugby and Cycling. Looking to find its foot in the hyper-competitive sports broadcast market, the company has also experimented with cricket rights.

At the time of its launch, Discovery had roped in Venkateish, who is also the former MD of ESPN Star, to work closely with DSport in the content acquisition space. Incidentally, Lex Sportel holds a TV channel licence under the name 1Sports.
