How govt plans to monitor TV content - Sathish - 10-28-2009

With the information and broadcasting ministry issuing showcause notices to several broadcasters, the government on Wednesday favoured a self-regulatory mechanism to monitor content that does not violate the laid down norms.

"The self-regulatory system, to which the broadcasters are also giving importance, should be so effective that the ministry does not have to send notices again and again," I&B Minister Ambika Soni said.

She said this when asked to comment on her Ministry sending a showcause notice on Monday to Colors, raising objection to certain content in reality show Big Boss.

The ministry has so far issued about 268 notices to various channels. Last week while interacting with business leaders, she had also discussed this aspect saying her ministry was against issuing notices and advisories to television channels on various content shown by them but it had no other choice.

"We have issued about 268 such notices. We don't want to do this, but can't help it. I feel self regulation is possible by media houses and they are doing it also. Thus, for addressing all these issues, we are trying to come out with an independent regulator or a mechanism," she said.
